78 RPM DISCS
78 rpm discs require a special touch and our disc transfer engineer Bob Jones has a range of specialist turntables, cartridges and stylii to ensure that the tip actually plays the music rather than the surface noise!
There are a number of critical factors in the successful transfer of a 78 rpm disc, not the least of which is the turntable speed. It may look like a 78 rpm disc but it may have been recorded at any of a number of standard speeds (e.g. 80 rpm)
As well as the mechanical handling and cleaning of the disc it is essential to match the size and shape of the stylus tip to the information in the groove. If a disc has been played with a worn stylus it may be possible to use a smaller (or larger) tip to avoid the damage.
Once the disc has been transcribed to a digital format it is then possible to use software to further reduce the clicks, crackles and surface noise.
We also now have a turntable which runs at 16-2/3 rpm making it possible for us to transfer any disc of any size (up to 16" diameter) and at any standard or non-standard speed.
